EC Mapping – First 2000 Days Early Childhood Development Network

The Early Child Development Mapping Project (ECMap) is contracted by Alberta Education for a five-year period to conduct research on early childhood development in Alberta and build community coalitions to respond to local needs. ECMap is part of the Government of Alberta’s Early Child Development (ECD) Mapping Initiative. The Initiative will provide families, service providers, educators, communities and policy makers with a measurement tool (EDI) and a picture of how young children in Alberta are doing, so that communities can work together to support healthy development. EC Map shares research, quality resources and community building tools  to support early childhood development efforts, and houses the results of the EDI data (kindergarten readiness testing in 5 domains of development) across the province. Café is working locally to provide support for EC Map Calgary community coalitions with resources and mentorship for engaging community through conversations and supportive processes.

In Calgary, EDI results now show that one in four children are experiencing difficulty in at least one of the five domains of development. Calgary has ten coalitions that are now working to determine locally relevant actions and move the needle on these results. Recognizing the window of opportunity of the first 2000 days of a child’s life for optimal development, Café is excited to be engaged in the start up of a city-wide network initiative that brings together people and organizations who are passionate about capitalizing on the early years. This initiative is an opportunity to collaborate and support  the 10 coalitions by sharing successes, knowledge, assets and resources. Adopting a collective impact approach, Calgary’s First 2000 Days Early Childhood Development Network is now a growing Calgary-based movement  focused on raising awareness of the the importance of the early years and creating and supporting collective actions to make a difference for young children across the city.  Simultaneously at the community level, each coalition is working toward this shared goal by adopting community-driven strategies to find locally relevant solutions.

The First 2000 Days network offers a unique opportunity to collectively make the most of the early years opportunity. Café encourages all parents, schools, and community organizations to connect with their local coalition and explore opportunities to be involved.  More on this…
